Clear skin through cleanser

Why do you even need a cleanser?

It's often emphasized how important daily cleansing of the face, neck, and décolleté is. This naturally raises the question of why this is so important and whether one could simply apply skincare products directly. There's a very compelling argument in favor of using facial cleansers: various types of deposits constantly accumulate on the skin. Overnight, lint from bedding settles on the skin. Sebum also forms on the facial skin at night, and sweat collects. During the day, similar factors come into play: sweat dries on the skin, fine dust settles, and cosmetics become trapped in the pores. Skin type can also contribute to these deposits. Dry skin, for example, tends to flake easily, while oily skin quickly develops a greasy film of sebum. We can't perceive all of these residues with the naked eye. But it seems logical that such a layer on the skin is bothersome. If you were to apply skincare products directly on top of this, they would sometimes pill and be less easily absorbed. You would therefore only achieve a fraction of the intended effect. That's why it's so important to cleanse your skin beforehand so it can properly absorb the subsequent products. You'll notice the difference very easily, especially when it comes to rolling out the skin. Ideally, you should cleanse both morning and evening.

What different types of cleansers are there, and what should I look for when choosing one?

Cleansers come in a variety of forms: gel, foam, milk, or oil. Which consistency you prefer is entirely a matter of personal taste. Aside from the texture, two things are crucial when choosing a cleanser: firstly, which skin type it's recommended for, and secondly, that it's a gentle formula. As strange as it may sound, you can actually compare facial cleansing to cleaning your home. While you might occasionally need a more aggressive, specialized cleaner for housework, a mild, all-purpose cleaner will usually suffice. It's similar with facial cleansing. A particularly intensive cleanse might be necessary now and then, but that's rather the exception. A gentle cleanser for daily use is kind to the skin and does its job perfectly; it doesn't need to be a highly effective cleansing product. On the contrary, your skin will appreciate gentle treatment.

Our range includes three types of cleansers. The Hydrating Cream Cleanser is a creamy cleansing milk. ThePurifying Gel Cleanser has a light, gel-like texture. The Calming Oil Cleanser is a cleansing oil. All three cleansers are gentle and leave your skin feeling soft. Only the Calming Oil Cleanser feels slightly heavier upon application. However, it has the advantage of being the only one that effectively removes waterproof makeup and stubborn skincare products like sunscreen. Below you'll find more information about each cleanser and how to find the right one for you.

The Hydrating Cream Cleanser

The name of the Hydrating Cream Cleanser is quite literal; it has a milky to creamy consistency and a moisturizing effect. Furthermore, it has a positive effect on the skin barrier. We recommend it for dry and normal skin types.

The Hydrating Cream Cleanser contains mild surfactants. Surfactants are the ingredients in cleansing products that create the foaming effect. They also break down surface structures, allowing the aforementioned layer of residue to be loosened and finally washed away. The kaolin, also known as white clay, binds oils and helps prevent blemishes. A complex of ceramides improves the skin's barrier function. Finally, almond oil leaves skin feeling supple. It also moisturizes and replenishes lipids, which is especially important for dry skin.

The Purifying Gel Cleanser

The Purifying Gel Cleanser lives up to its name. It has a gel-like texture, but it feels much lighter than you would expect from a gel. It is particularly effective against sebum buildup on the skin and in the pores. When used, it creates a very fine lather and leaves the skin feeling fresh after rinsing. Because of its focus on dissolving sebum, we recommend it for oily and combination skin.

Like the Hydrating Cream Cleanser, the Purifying Gel Cleanser also contains mild surfactants. Its main active ingredient is salicylic acid (BHA). This ensures that sebum is removed from the pores and even penetrates deeper layers of the skin. This is because, as a fat-soluble hydroxy acid, it can penetrate the skin more effectively. The ingredient glycerin acts as a moisturizer, ensuring that the skin is cleansed without being dried out.

The Calming Oil Cleanser

The Calming Oil Cleanser is a nourishing and soothing cleansing oil. As mentioned earlier, the cleanser is also effective on waterproof makeup and removes it reliably. The cleanser is suitable for all skin types.

The key ingredients in the Calming Oil Cleanser are plum kernel oil and sunflower oil. Both are known for leaving skin feeling velvety soft. Plum kernel oil is also particularly rich in nutrients. Sunflower oil, on the other hand, provides a calming effect and is also anti-inflammatory. Furthermore, sunflower oil has a beneficial effect on both the skin's moisture balance and its barrier function.

Which cleanser is right for my skin?

When choosing the right cleanser, your skin type is the most important factor. Your skincare products should always be tailored to your skin type. Unsure which skin type you have? Our article about the four skin types might help. It includes a simple self-test, the distinguishing characteristics of each skin type, and sample routines. Of course, our experts are also happy to advise you.

Now we have to contradict ourselves just a little, because there isn't necessarily one cleanser that suits you for life. This is because skin is as changeable as everything else in life. You should always consider your current skin condition when choosing skincare products. Unlike skin type, skin condition can be constantly changing. Seasonal changes, hormones, stress, a change in diet – these are all factors that can alter your skin's condition, so your current skin needs may differ from the usual needs of your skin type. Therefore, it can definitely be useful to have a selection of different cleansers in your bathroom cabinet to be able to respond to changing skin needs.

Another reason for using multiple cleansers: double cleansing. We often emphasize how effective double cleansing is. Especially if you regularly wear makeup or sunscreen, it's often impossible to remove all residue completely with just one cleanser. This makes sense, since both makeup and sunscreen are designed to adhere to the skin as long and effectively as possible. To remove these residues from the skin and pores, double cleansing is recommended. An oil-based cleanser like the Calming Oil Cleanser is best for removing sunscreen and makeup. Afterward, you can use your favorite cleanser to remove any remaining fine particles.

Tips and tricks

For the interested reader, here are our favorite tips and tricks on the topic of cleansers.

  1. Avoid hot water: Whether for moistening before applying the cleanser or for rinsing afterward, high water temperature can irritate the skin. Therefore, it's best to keep the water temperature lukewarm.
  2. Combine products with similar effects: It's worthwhile to complement your cleanser with products that have similar effects, and vice versa. If your skincare goal is sebum regulation and clearer skin, then feel free to use other skincare products that fall into this category. The same applies if you want to provide your skin with more moisture or strengthen your skin barrier. A good skincare routine goes hand in hand with the cleanser used beforehand.
  3. Application time: To get even more effect from your cleanser, simply let it sit for one to two minutes before rinsing it off. This short time is enough for a more intensive effect.
